Part of the Series : Child of Our Time 2016
Changing Times | Changing Minds

Since our teens were born, the world has transformed: from changing families to economic uncertainties and competition, all in the glare of the social media spotlight. In this episode, Professor Robert Winston and Professor Tanya Byron follow our teens through their GCSE year to discover how they are being shaped by these unique times. In a bold experiment, Child of Our Time teens gave us access to their digital lives, opening a 24/7 window into their phone use and the impact of constant connectivity on friendship, sleep and anxiety. As our teens reach this landmark age, we explore how they cope with the challenges of life to build their dreams for the future.

Teenagers of Today (00:0-30)
This segment orients viewers to the longitudinal study of 25 babies from across the United Kingdom. See images of the study participants as they grow throughout childhood. This generation has grown up with advanced technology and economic uncertainty.

Changing Family (06:09)
Nathan's parents separated when he was young, but they remained in the same home to co-parent and establish an open family relationship. His father's sexual orientation has had little impact on Nathan's development.

Attitudes and Values (01:30)
During adolescence, friends play an important role in establishing values and attitudes. The digital revolution has made friends more accessible and available to this generation.

24/7 Connection (04:38)
Triplets Alice, Mabel, and Phoebe navigate the digital world, social media, and develop new friendships.

Cause For Concern (05:35)
Research shows the patterns of social media use by the teens in the study. Evidence suggests that those who multitask with their phones have reduced attention, decreased performance, and a potential for isolation.

Technology and Social Skills (00:0-298)
Technology broadened the scope of communication. Tellison spends many hours gaming online; it has opened a new world of friendships. Teenagers spend an average of nine hours a day behind screens.

Sleep and Technology (15:42)
Technology is impacting the sleep hygiene of adolescents. Activity monitors and sleep diaries show that teenagers work on a different body clock than adults. Stimulation and blue light prevent quality sleep.

GCSE Grades (09:46)
Research suggests that improved exam scores could be due to a desire to succeed instilled in the children of migrant families. Cortisol levels reveal periods of stress. Today's teens experience more stress than previous generations.

Stress Relief (05:21)
To manage stress, teens find activities they have a passion for and rely on community support.

Transitional Times (09:20)
Identical twins Alex and Ivo are starting to differentiate during their teenage years. Ivo is leaving his family to study 3,000 miles away. The teens are moving on into their adult lives.
