Puberty usually occurs during adolescence when children develop physically and emotionally into young men and women. Usually this starts to happen around age 10 for girls and age 12 for boys. But what if a younger child—say, a 7-year-old girl or a 9-year-old boy—begins showing signs of puberty? This is called precocious puberty, and it can be both physically and emotionally difficult for children. It can also be the sign of an underlying health problem and can affect the child’s development in the long term. This program will help viewers better understand precocious puberty, the history, the symptoms, and the advances made in treating it. (27 minutes)

Overview of Precocious Puberty (01:21)
Some children show signs of puberty before they start kindergarten. Precocious puberty can affect a child's psycho-social development. Precocious puberty can be slowed down, and in some cases reversed.

Puberty as a Bridge (01:37)
Two hundred years ago, the onset of puberty occurred around age 19. Puberty serves as a bridge between childhood and adulthood.

Puberty Onset (03:20)
Onset of puberty in girls is 7 to 8 years up to 13 years; in boys the onset is age 9 up to age 14. Computer graphics help viewers see how the pituitary gland is stimulated to produce sex hormones.

Signs of Puberty (02:09)
Signs of puberty include adult body odor, underarm hair and facial hair, pubic hair, sudden growth spurts, acne, voice changes, mood changes, and menstruation in girls.

Puberty in Toddler (03:40)
At nine months, Talia had developed adult body odor. At 18 months, Talia developed pubic hair. She was treated by a pediatric endocrinologist who took her through a standard sequence of tests.

Consequences in Adulthood (04:45)
Children who develop precocious puberty and do not get treated may be left with unfortunate consequences later in life. Children do not understand what is happening to their bodies and do not know what to expect.

Early Diagnosis and Treatment (03:50)
Treatment for precocious puberty can be initiated when it is diagnosed. Treatment to halt precocious puberty is gonadotropin releasing hormone analog (GnRH-a). It suppresses pituitary secretion of gonadotropins (reproductive hormones).

Parents Share Stories and Feelings (02:27)
Three children with three different situations of precocious puberty are featured. Parents share their feelings, hopes, and dreams for their children. All three children have the GnRH-a implant.
