This video features original silent footage from René Spitz's research on child development. It focuses on the early emotions displayed by infants.

Unspecific Negative Excitement (03:59)

See footage of infants negatively responding to outside stimulus and then being comforted or cleaned by their loving mothers. Some of the mothers comfort their children by feeding them or rocking them.

Pleasure (04:32)

At three months of age, infants begin frequently smiling when they see the faces of their parents and other adults. See footage of a child's earliest smile reaction as a response to the pleasurable experience of eating.

Differentiation of Negative From Positive Emotions (05:11)

See footage of how infants respond according to what adults enter the room; the babies respond with delight when they know the adult, but act bewildered around strangers. When strangers actively approach the infants, they become very anxious but behave normally when the unknown person leaves.

Diversification (09:18)

See footage of a week old infant's unresponsive behavior towards an adult compared with the wide range of emotional responses given by an older infant. The psychologists theorize the elements within the child's environment elicit a different response from the infant, such as a mask causing the child to be afraid.
