This program illustrates how to carry out a target child observation. By observing the techniques demonstrated, viewers will have the opportunity to quickly grasp the skills needed to carry out this kind of observation effectively in your everyday practice. Initially shown as one continuous 10-minute piece in a classroom, the program shows five children sitting around a table and drawing. The objective is to examine social development. Two children, one socially outgoing, the other withdrawn are observed separately. Written observations are displayed on the screen after each minute. At the end of each ten minute observation there is an evaluation on screen that interprets the observation. The children’s drawings are also shown and evaluated. Watching the sequences repeatedly offers viewers an opportunity to practice and really get to grips with this technique, as well as to concentrate on other objectives, such as language development or concentration.

Target Child Observation Technique: Introduction (02:01)
This film shows a ten minute sequence of five-year-old children working on a self-portrait. First, the sequence is shown uninterrupted. The second and third playbacks observe single children in detail with observations recorded every minute.

Complete Sequence (10:22)

Five children work on drawing self-portraits. They compare pictures and share ideas. One boy brings colored pencils to the table. A teacher comes by and checks on their progress.

Target Child C Observation (21:58)

This sequence records exactly what the target child does and says, pausing each minute to show notes on her activity, language, and social interaction. She works on a self-portrait in a small group, sharing her picture and ideas with other children.

Target Child C Evaluation (02:01)

Observations show that the target child is friendly and confident. She frequently starts conversation, speaking to everyone in the group and addressing the teacher. She shows care toward others and a developing understanding of rules and socially acceptable behavior.

Target Child D Observation (19:48)

This sequence records exactly what the target child does and says, pausing each minute to show notes on his activity, language, and social interaction. He works on a self-portrait in a small group. He watches the other children and speaks little.

Target Child D Evaluation (01:52)

Observations show the target child is quiet and never starts conversations, although he has listening and answering skills. He is easily distracted from his task and watches the group. He is socially immature for his age.

The Children's Drawings (01:20)

See self-portraits by target children C and D. Child C represents people with separate body parts, typical for a five year old. Child D draws "tadpole figures" typical of a three and a half year old.
