India Love or Rape?

The horrific gang rape and subsequent death of a 23-year-old Indian student in 2012 caused outrage around the world. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to demand tougher sentencing and a more efficient justice system. But the underlying cause of India’s staggering rate of violence against women may be difficult to overcome. In many areas patriarchal values are enforced by village councils, which at times go as far as murdering women who, for instance, seek love-marriages outside their own caste. This documentary explores the factors contributing to India’s high incidence of rape and domestic abuse, giving voice to the victims and activists seeking reform; and to the traditionalists, who say the women themselves are to blame for “crossing the line.” (Portions with English subtitles, 50 minutes)
