Stress and distractions are major obstacles to learning at any class level. For the elementary classroom, specialized exercises called Eye Openers have been shown to dramatically improve focus and awareness among students. This program follows Dr. Martha Eddy-a widely respected educational consultant, founder of the Center for Kinesthetic Education, and the creator of Eye Openers-as she puts her movement and body coordination strategies into action. Working with a lively group of children in a real-world classroom setting, Dr. Eddy introduces simple yet effective exercises that cover relaxation, eye-hand coordination, eye-body coordination, attention warm-up, posture, peripheral vision, filtering out distractions, shifting focus between near and far, and more. The video contains sections on additional resources for educators-but Dr. Eddy's exercises can also be applied to adult learning environments. See for yourself the difference that Eye Openers can make! (50 minutes)

What Are Eye Openers Exercises? (01:41)

FREE PREVIEW

Dr. Martha Eddy offers a rationale for Eye Openers exercises.

Whole Body Exercises to Build Visual Skills (01:09)

Dr. Eddy's exercises address a number of visual skills.

Art of Palming: Classroom Management at Your Fingertips (02:10)

Palming is an exercise that gives the visual system a chance to rest. Dr. Eddy demonstrates this technique. The retina needs darkness in order to refuel itself. Palming allows each child to create a quiet space.

Letter Writing: Eye/Hand Coordination Tracking (04:02)

Children finger-spell the first letters of their first names. The children make the letter in the air and learn each other's names. Vocal rhythms accompany the movements.

Eye-Body Coordination (02:28)

Children respond to objects in the room by pointing and following with their eyes. Children move their eyes without moving their bodies. Children do a palming exercise to rest between other exercises.

Attention Warm-Up: Name Catching (03:32)

Children roll a ball among themselves in a game that helps them learn each other's names while tracking the rolling ball with their eyes. Dr. Eddy takes the children through finger tracking exercises.

Better Posture for Better Vision (03:20)

Children balance pieces of paper on their heads and then track finger movements. Proper spinal alignment energizes the body and helps focus. Children engage their imaginations while palming in order to sharpen their vision.

Seeing the Point: Filtering Out Distractions (04:08)

Children make blinders from their hands in an exercise that helps them filter out distractions. Using rolled up paper, they find colored objects to help them build the skill of differentiation.

Shifting Focus Near & Far (05:46)

Children learn to connect desk work to board work through exercises that cause them to shift their focus from near to far. Children use their imaginations to repeat what they do during their exercises.

Peripheral Vision (01:45)

Exercises that stimulate peripheral vision increases health and safety possibilities for children.

Eye Play Makes Learning Fun (03:39)

Children engage in "Adams' Family eye play" to reinforce a number of exercises. Soft eyes help to avoid eye strain and awaken awareness.

Movement Activity Elaborations (04:19)

Children participate in freeze dances in which children learn to make shapes. In a game called "Where the Wild Things Are," children learn to self-regulate if they have opportunities to handle risky circumstances.

Explaining Visual Skills (01:37)

Dr. Eddy explains midline focus activities, and memory and focus activities. The latter requires using the imagination. Eddy expands on the concept of images in the experiences of children.

Eye Openers: 4-Step Integrative Process (02:09)

Dr. Eddy explains how palming exercises help children visualize darkness for deep rest. Eye Openers also introduce a novel 4-step integrative process that works from book to board and can be creatively used in a variety of ways.

Supplies and Equipment (02:29)

Viewers learn what kinds of supplies Dr. Eddy uses in her Eye Openers classrooms. Eddy asserts that when learning is fun it becomes internalized more easily. Eddy's key points about Eye Openers as management tools are summarized.
