This documentary tells the story of two young Cree women healing from the intergenerational trauma they experience living in the isolated James Bay Cree community of Mistissini, Quebec. Maryjane and Dayna rise from unfortunate circumstances and find hope, inspiring them to work to improve their community for future generations on a reserve still struggling to cope with the appalling legacy left behind by Canada’s residential school system.

Dayna Gull has been in and out of foster care since the age of two. She currently lives two hours away from her family; Gull recalls running away.

Sonrise Camp (03:09)
Gull likes the camp because she does not want to drink. Maryjane Petawabano's generation is the children of survivors; trauma at residential schools affects parenting. She wants to be a child and youth counselor.

Reservation Life (02:36)
Youth engage in violent activities and partying. Petawabano discusses getting off the streets and leaving her boyfriend.

Youth Healing Services (03:16)
Gull explains why she started drinking and reflects on her family history. Her social worker transfers her to a group home; Gull wants to live with her mother.

Mistissini Community Elder (01:25)
Sally Gunner recalls Cree children being taken away for school. Today, three times as many First Nation children are in foster care than at the peak of the residential school system.

Family Life (04:47)
Gull wants to be with her mother. Petawabano reflects on parenting, her daughter's father, and her dreams.

Community Helpers (02:12)
Petawabano wants her daughter to know her language and culture. Gull considers what she wants to be when she grows up.
