In this documentary, Horizon launches the 2014 Longitude Prize for a innovation that will respond to a 21st century scienfic challenge. The original Longitude Prize was awarded 300 years ago to John Harrison for his chronometer clock, which enabled ships to determine their exact position at sea. This invention reduced the number of shipwrecks and enabled Britain's global trade to flourish. Professor Alice Roberts looks at the history of this quest for a scientific solution to a life-threatening problem, while other presenters including Liz Bonnin and Michael Mosley explore six issues that could be the focus of the 2014 prize, includingmalnutrition, antibiotic resistance, paralysis, dementia, freshwater, and zero-carbon flight.
