This program illustrates the dramatic story of Anna, a teenager suffering in silence, living in a home wrecked by domestic violence. The mental and physical abuse that her mother endures, under the hand of her new husband, is something Anna sees regularly. The visible and devastating after-effects she has to witness as her mother is hurt time and again, finally spurs Anna to take action.Anna devises a plan to get help for her and her mother: she feigns sickness and has the school nurse call her mother to pick her up, hoping that the nurse will notice her mother's bruises and convince her to seek help. But Anna's mother, Mary, like most victims, is not yet ready to take the steps needed.The domestic situation becomes dangerous and Anna finds the courage to summon the police for help. Eventually, Anna and her mother find safety, happiness and independence. They urge others to take the steps necessary to free themselves from the chains of domestic violence, because, "No one deserves to lose a smile."
